How to Prepare for a Job Interview

how to prepare for a job interview 2021

For many, job interviews can be quite daunting. It is the defining moment that will determine whether or not you’re what the employer is looking for. Are you unsure of how to prepare for a job interview? No worries! We’ve got you covered with these tips.

Analyze the Job Description
● Make a list of all the skills and qualifications the company is looking for. Using this list, compare your own skillset and see if it aligns with what the company needs.
● Think of specific examples of past work or situations where your skills have come into play. These can also be used to serve as examples of your experience and leadership skills during the interview
● Separate yourself from the competition, and provide them specific reasons in relation to the company on why you fit the job. Tell them what you like about their company, and how it relates to your own personal interests.

Research the Company
● Look at the company’s website. Read more on their history. This can often be found in the “About” section on company websites. When looking through the site pay close attention to their corporate values. Keep an eye out for recurring themes mentioned on the site.
● Check out their social media links. See what their public image is like, and how they market themselves to consumers. You may find information there that is exclusive to their social media.
● Network, and see if any friends, family or colleagues have any insider information as to what the company is like. Getting information from a primary source is a good way of being a step ahead of other candidates.
● If you can’t find any sources from your own life websites like Glassdoor are good resources when it comes to giving insight on what specific companies look for, and how to prepare for job interviews for certain companies. On Glassdoor they also share their interview experiences, and explain the process in greater detail.

Practice Interviewing
● Practice interviewing with a friend beforehand so you are prepared for any questions they may ask. If the interview is in person, ask your friend to interview you in person, if it is over the phone then practice over the phone.
● If it is an online interview, test your computer, and the platform you will be interviewed on beforehand to ensure there will be no technical difficulties.
● Practice answering common questions such as “Why do you want the job? What are your qualifications?”
● Practice sounding and looking convincing. Be enthusiastic, and show interest. Pay attention to your body language, and sit up straight. Show that you are confident in yourself, and your abilities.

How to Prepare on the Day of the Job Interview
● Don’t bring any unnecessary items. All you need is yourself, your credentials, and a copy of your resume, and references.
● Don’t forget to put your phone on “Do not disturb” or shut it off completely. A ringing or buzzing phone can be very distracting. You want to demonstrate that this interview is your priority and a buzzing phone will show your interest lies elsewhere.
● Look the part, dress appropriately, and wear something that you would normally wear to go to work. Business casual is always your best bet when unsure of the dress code.

With these tips in mind you should have enough knowledge on how to prepare for your next job interview. Best of luck!
