Tips and Tricks for A Successful Job Interview
- Telephone Interviews are just as important as face to face interviews so make sure that you are just as prepared for them. The phone interview is your first chance to impress. You must sound strong from the get go. Make sure that you are in a quiet place and no background noise can be heard by the interviewer on the other end of the line. If the interviewer catches you at a bad time, it will not hurt to say so. Set up the phone call at a later time or for another day. This will make you sound more professional than to try to force something at a time when it is clearly not conducive for a good conversation. Plus this gives you time to review the position you applied to and learn more about the company and your Interviewer. This leads me to the next one…
- Research about the Interviewer. It will be good to know what their job title is so that you can prepare for potential questions. An HR Person usually asks general questions about your resume, reason for leaving your previous position, what your motivations are, your salary expectations, etc. Hiring managers or managers whom the position will be reporting to will be more interested in how you do your job, the results you’ve had in your previous position, your day to day tasks, etc. If and when there is a third interview, this is usually the decision-maker. The one whom you should impress the most. You should be prepared to sound smart and well put together.
- This is very important! Arrive 15, yes 15 minutes before your interview. You need this time to relax and get comfortable with the environment. Have a little small talk with the receptionist. Do some breathing exercises. Review your resume and the job posting. Read the paper or coffee table book in front of you so you have ammunition to break the ice if needed before the interview begins. The message here is simple. Just be there early. The worst thing that you can do is arrive late. This will leave you stressed out, nervous and looking like a wreck as you try to explain to the interviewer why you were late. So please, please arrive 15 minutes before your interview.
